BEIJING (AP) — Huang Dongliang says his uncle was being ignored by his low-paid cancer specialist at a Chinese government hospital. So the family gave the doctor a “hongbao,” the traditional red envelope used for gifts, with 3,000 yuan ($480).

“We could feel an obvious difference” after that, said Huang, who lives in the southeastern city of Quanzhou. “The doctor started to do more checkups, to give suggestions and advice and offered a detailed chemotherapy plan.” [Read the full article]

BEIJING, July 27 (UPI) — Chinese authorities have arrested 18 GlaxoSmithKline employees in a bribery investigation, official Chinese media reported.

China National Radio said the city of Zhengzhou has taken steps to “hold 18 GlaxoSmithKline employees and medical personnel,” The Wall Street Journal reported Saturday. [Read the full article]

The head of drugs giant GlaxoSmithKline has sought to blame a handful of senior managers for corruption allegations it is facing in China and said the company itself had been a victim of their actions.
